The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has warned all schools that India may soon face an outbreak of dengue and has ordered them to conduct a class to spread awareness about the viral disease once a week. The CBSE has asked all schools to appoint a teacher for it.
In a letter to all principals, the assistant secretary (affiliation) of the CBSE, Mr Piush K. Sharma, has referred to media reports claiming that the virus may strike India with unprecedented fury and has therefore ordered all schools to appoint a nodal teacher to organise various activities as part of an anti-vector campaign.
Students will be encouraged to create projects on dengue or mosquito control as part of the campaign. “Dengue is a viral disease and there is no effective vaccine to cure it. Prevention and control of the mosquito population is the easiest and most effective way to contain dengue. This year, the intermittent rains and the warm, humid weather have provided mosquitoes with the ideal conditions to multiply and so there is a greater threat of a dengue outbreak,” said Mr Sharma.
In addition to the special class, the National Cadet Corps (NCC), which influences several students, will also help create awareness about dengue. And, as an incentive for the students to join the programme, the school will award marks to the participating students and it will be added to their extra curricular activities.
