Over three-quarters of Indians web surfers are most victimised by hackers and cybercriminals, including computer viruses, online credit card fraud and identity theft, security solutions provider after the Chinese, says a report released by Symantec, the makers of Norton security software. But Indian web surfers might also be safer from the cyber criminals because of their lying habits. The report finds India as the third least honest nation on the net after China and Brazil
About 65 per cent of Internet users globally have fallen victim to cybercrime, while the number is much higher forIndia at 76 per cent, second most victimised nation after China in terms of cyber attacks or cyber crime. About 60 per cent respondents said they were attacked by some form of computer virus and malware, making it one of the most common ways of attack, report added.
Symantec’s Regional Consumer Product Marketing Manager David Hall said cyber criminals can use viruses and Trojans (that give remote computer access) to gather personal information such as mothers’ maiden names and data on birth, driving licences, credit cards and passwords.
“These identities are known to be sold as complete package in the cyber world for prices as low as US $ 10,” Hall said. The study on the human impact of cyber crimes across 14 nations showed that only 8 per cent Indians think that they would become victim of a cyber attack. Once victimized, solving a cyber crime would take around 44 days and cost Rs 5,262 in India, in comparison to 28 days and US $334 (Rs. 15,700) elsewhere in the world.
The report noted that while 58 per cent of the victims (India) said they felt angry, 51 per cent said they felt cheated, while another 46 per cent annoyed/upset. In many cases, they blame themselves (88 per cent) for being attacked.
Nearly 57 per cent respondents said they expect cybercriminals will not be to be brought to justice, resulting in a reluctance to take action and a sense of helplessness.
